Rome in 48 Hours: A Perfect Weekend Itinerary

Two days in Rome is tight, but with a little planning you can see the icons and still leave time for a proper Italian espresso. Here's how to make every hour count.
Day one: the Vatican and beyond
Start early with your skip-the-line Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel visit, then step into the vast embrace of St. Peter's Square. Climb the dome for one of the best views in the city.
In the afternoon, stroll across the Tiber toward Castel Sant'Angelo and finish with sunset over the river — bring a gelato.
Day two: ancient Rome
Devote your morning to the Colosseum and Roman Forum, then wander to the Pantheon and Trevi Fountain. Toss a coin over your shoulder — legend says it guarantees your return to Rome.
End at the Spanish Steps or a rooftop bar in the Monti district for aperitivo as the city lights come on.
Where to eat
Skip the restaurants right beside the monuments. Walk a few streets into Trastevere or Monti for authentic cacio e pepe, and always order the house wine — it's usually excellent and inexpensive.
